CARPANEDA

CARPANEDA

Fernando Carpaneda is a distinguished contemporary artist celebrated for his radical contributions to punk and homoerotic art. Since the 1980s, Carpaneda has built a fearless visual language through sculpture and painting, challenging conventions while illuminating LGBTQIA+ narratives, punk identities, and bodies traditionally excluded from the mainstream art canon.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Sotheby’s in New York City, The Heckscher Museum of Art, The Long Island Museum, The Arkell Museum, Kenosha Public Museum, the Tom of Finland Foundation, the CBGB Art Gallery, and The Leslie Lohman Museum of Art. His market presence and institutional recognition continue to expand, marked by the sale of his work at Sotheby’s and the acquisition of his painting Pride into the Permanent Collection of The Presidency of Brazil, a historic moment for queer representation within political and national heritage holdings.

In 2024, Carpaneda was selected once again for the Long Island Biennial at The Heckscher Museum of Art, reinforcing his continued relevance and impact within museum-level contemporary discourse. That same year, he received an award from the curator of the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum, further acknowledging the resonance and critical strength of his practice. His painting showcased at the Arkell Museum was honored with Best in Show, cementing his standing as a leading voice in present-day figurative and countercultural art.

Carpaneda’s influence stretches deeply into music and underground culture. His artwork appears in The Best of Punk Globe Magazine, alongside figures like Debbie Harry, John Lydon, Boy George, and Joe Dallesandro, affirming his place within punk’s visual and historical archive. Additionally, his work is featured in Treasures of Gay Art, published by the Leslie Lohman Museum, in the lineage of Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Keith Haring.

His artistic presence has extended to public space as well, with select works exhibited on LED panels in Times Square. Carpaneda’s career—spanning decades of rebellion, sensuality, and unapologetic representation—has solidified him not only as a pioneer of punk and LGBTQIA+ art, but as an enduring force pushing the boundaries of cultural acceptance, beauty, and identity.

Artist Statement
My artistic style has evolved over decades of exploration across various mediums, including sculpture, painting, and drawing. I strive to address relevant social taboos in my work, often delving into themes deeply rooted in the punk/underground scene or LGBTQIA+ contexts.

My pieces serve as a commentary on issues of exclusion, belonging, racial and gender discrimination, social inequality, and anti-fascism, particularly poignant in today's world. In a society marked by division, I believe art serves as a powerful tool for fostering dialogue. Regardless of one's background, age, or societal status, my art aims to resonate with individuals, inviting them to engage with the themes of my work and, by extension, with their own identities.

Central to my artistic expression is the celebration of ordinary people and the embrace of natural, authentic bodies. Through this approach, I seek to create a sense of intimacy and relatability, drawing viewers closer to my work and, ultimately, to themselves.
